About our new Manager
How far are Liverpool from Brendan Rodgers' vision?
New boss Brendan Rodgers looks to oversee a revolution in style at Liverpool
Playing Style
Brendan Rodgers' playing style is often compared to Barcelona's, and
for good reason. The system depends upon a short passing style that aims
at patient build-up and possession dominance.
When in
possession, the passing is fast, precise and simple, as they wait for
the opposition to tire, slowly pulling them out of position and
exploiting the space. When out of possession, they press high up the
pitch, quickly closing down the opposition to regain the ball
immediately. In theory, as the opposing players are tired and lying deep
in their own half, high pressing forces them to clear the ball
aimlessly.
These two core concepts compliment one another, as
highlighted by Rodgers himself: “The only time we rest is when we have
the ball. When we haven’t got the ball is the moment for intense
pressure to get the ball back. In order to recuperate and conserve
energy, we’ll build our way through the game.”
When they have
the ball, the opposition are forced to work hard, while the team in
possession patiently turn the screw. As well as conserving energy, they
can prevent the other side from scoring ("If we have the ball, you can't
score, no matter how big or strong you are. I've always worked off
that").
Last season Swansea would happily recycle possession over
and over again if they needed to, showing immense discipline in attack
and defense. Players are expected to calculate precisely when to move
forward and when to press. Risk taking is forbidden; keeping possession
is everything.
Rodgers' players must be highly technically
proficient. They must be adaptable, mobile, and like the ball on the
ground. So, who will fit this system, and who will be replaced?
Conclusion
If Rodgers is able to sign Joe Allen, and perhaps a winger, then his
Liverpool squad should already be capable of quickly adapting to his
Spanish-style system. Dalglish's depleted, eclectic squad doesn't
initially look like one prepared for a Rodgers revolution, but certain
players frozen out under King Kenny may make a triumphant return.
Bellamy,
Aquilani, and Henderson may find themselves greatly improved under the
former Swansea boss. With the addition of Joe Allen, the squad will
already have the foundations for Rodgers' tiki-taka vision.

2012/13 Season
The start of the new season begins with stiff opposition and strong challenges. In our opening 6 games we play both Mancs, and Arsenal (plus West Brom, Sunderland and Norwich). Realistically we should be looking to make progress on our finish last season and challenge for European football, so picking up early points is vital, as it can create a positive (or negative) approach to the upcoming season.
Take our first game, West Brom away. With all due respect to the, they are a side who we should be beating, and with our next game against the title holders, I think it's essential we get a win here. Confidence going into a fixture that will be a tough challenge can make all the difference, and hopefully set us up for a good start.
No doubt we will get some people questioning the likes of Borini and Suarez when they don't score hat-tricks on their first game this season, and some will question the manager, despite him being in charge for how many competitive games..?
This season will need many players to prove why they should stay in the squad, if they are in the squad come the transfer deadline. Players like Downing, who yes has ability, but failed to perform last season. (I was talking to a friend who said it was pressure, I pointed out that Jessica Ennis won gold over 2 days in front of 80,00, with no end of pressure, and Downing got 38 chances over the space of months, and failed to produce the goods)
Another player, for me, is Adam. He was inconsistent at best last season in my opinion. Yes he had good moments, but he's not the quality we need, and sp must step it up. He tried many "Hollywood Passes" that cost us possession last season.
Joe Cole is up there, he was on loan and performed well, but if he wants to nail a spot in the team, he has to work.
So if we all support this wonderful club, and it's players, and manager. we are set for a solid season. Don't expect anything ridiculous, nice cup runs and around 5th or 6th is a realistic, if not optimistic prediction, but that is what I'm going for. We are rebuilding, seeing youngster come through, and veterans fade. So lets hold our heads up high through the highs and lows. Just think, we can't hit the
